History and tradition
The private distillery Unterthurner has been family-owned for three generations. The distillery, recognised as one of the most distinguished distilleries in South Tyrol, was founded in 1947 by Ignaz Unterthurner. He started out with the production of the distillates that were typical back then, such as grape marc, Williams pear or juniper berries.
In the early eighties his son Alois took over as general manager. Unterthurner can boast of great achievements in the area of speciality spirits, particularly due to the unique creation of our wild raspberry spirit – Waldler. Awarded a gold medal in Ljubljana, this speciality is the absolute favourite of all “fruit connoisseurs”. The refinement of the grappa range and the exclusive distillation of wild berries has ensured new standards continue to be set. Despite increased demand and greater requirements with respect to cellarage technology, the distillery has managed to remain on the old family property.
After Alois Unterthurner, together with his wife Christine, ran the company for more than two decades, their son Stephan, with the assistance of his sister Martina, took over the management of the firm three years ago. The new family generation introduced innovations and modernisations, particularly in the field of distillation. For the Unterthurner family, preserving tradition does not mean completely ruling out new technology. The creativity and wealth of ideas of this family of entrepreneurs have resulted in numerous innovations in the field of distillation.
The “Selvaticus” wild berry spirits are a perfect example of the creative innovation of the fine distillery of Unterthurner. In this category you will find special rarities such as sea buckthorn, blackthorn, rowanberry, cranberry and many others.
We will continue to put all our effort into offering new and delicious products to all connoisseurs of fine spirits.
